Letter to friends and supporters from GPMI Chair

Dear friends and supporters of the Green Party of Michigan,

As our state unemployment level hits 10.6% and the world economy is in tatters, the Green Party is meeting March 28-29 at the Upland Hills Ecological Awareness Center in Oakland County (www.uheac.org). We will be discussing and planning what to do in response to this unprecedented crisis.

As our friends and collaborators, we value your input and we need it if we are going to go forward in common and united struggle.

We are asking you to submit in whatever format you like – written, oral, youtube – your thoughts and proposals for what the Green Party should do and say in response to this crisis.

You are also invited to participate in the discussion Saturday afternoon, March 28. More details will be forthcoming.

In solidarity,

Fred Vitale
State Chairperson

MORATORIUM
NOW! COALITION TO STOP FORECLOSURES AND EVICTIONS

23 East Adams,
4th Floor, Detroit, MI 48226

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
February 1, 2009

DEMONSTRATION AT STATE OF STATE ADDRESS,

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2009, 6:00 PM AT THE STATE CAPITOL

IT’S TIME FOR GOV. GRANHOLM TO PUT THE SURVIVAL OF THE PEOPLE

BEFORE THE BANKS, DECLARE A STATE OF ECONOMIC EMERGENCY,

AND PLACE A TWO-YEAR MORATORIUM ON FORECLOSURES,

EVICTIONS, AND UTILITY SHUT-OFFS IN MICHIGAN

It was two years ago that activists with the Moratorium Now! Coalition
first raised to Gov. Jennifer Granholm that she exercise her emergency
powers under Michigan law to place a Moratorium on Foreclosures, Evictions
and Utility Shut-offs. Had she acted then, tens of thousands of
Michiganders would still be in their homes; our communities would not
have been destroyed with homes in Detroit selling at a median price
of $7,500 in 2008; and countless individuals would not have frozen to
death. Along with the banks and financial interests who have plundered
the people of Michigan, Granholm, through her deliberate indifference,
is fully culpable for the incredible suffering experienced by poor and
working people in our state.

On Tuesday, we will again be demonstrating at the Governor’s State of
the State address. It’s too late for half measures. The
time is now for Granholm to declare a State of Economic Emergency in
Michigan and place a Two year Moratorium on Foreclosures, Evictions
and Utility Shut-offs. Nothing less will suffice. A two
year moratorium will allow the people of Michigan to survive while the
Obama (2-year) stimulus plan has a chance to take effect. There
is plenty of legal precedent for this action and she knows it.
The question is, who is Granholm going to represent, the workers and
poor, or the banking interests which have been bailed out with trillions
of our tax dollars?

And it is time for the media to end their silence and begin challenging
the governor on her inaction which has destroyed the lives of so many
in Michigan.

Transportation from Detroit to the demonstration at the State Capitol in Lansing will
leave at 4:00 p.m. from the parking lot of the Michigan Center for High
Technology, off Temple between Second and Third in Detroit. Call
313-887-4344 for transportation information.

Detroit Water Takeover Resistance Conference

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 in Eastern Market @ Bert’s Warehouse Theater, 5:30PM, 2727 Russell Street @ Division, Detroit, Michigan

Dear Detroiter:

Some of the first “water department takeover” attempt maneuvers have been made to snatch control of the Detroit Water and Sewage Department. The plan appears to start with selling of pieces of our system. This is nothing less than another assault on our City and the people. We must turn back the continued dismantling of the City of Detroit. The people must lead on the water issue, then our elected officials must follow.

It's not what you know, it's who you know.

The Michigan Citizen is reporting that my new State Representative, Jimmy Womack, gave a cushy $60K job to my former State Representative, Virgil Smith Jr.

Smith, who was term-limited, supported Womack in his race for the congressional seat. Womack says this had no bearing on his role in the matter.

Do you believe him?
