It is with great pleasure that the National Planning Committee (NPC) of the US Social Forum announces that Detroit, Michigan will be hosting the next US Social Forum!
The NPC has also chosen the five amazing and fierce organizations that will serve as local anchors for the process. They are: Centro Obrero de Detroit, Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice, East Michigan Environmental Action Council, Michigan Welfare Rights Organization and South Eastern Michigan Jobs With Justice.
With this decision made, we are ready to launch the Road to Detroit: USSF II and have a face-to-face meeting with the anchors, the Detroit Organizing Committee and the members of the NPC. Two weekends were offered up as possibilities: March 13-15 or March 27-29. The second weekend works for more NPC members but we need your input, obviously, before we can make a decision. We will be needing your help in planning this gathering.
We have a lot of work ahead of us, which we are all very excited about! It would make sense to schedule a conference call with the anchor organizations and some NPC members to begin the process that will lead us to another successful social forum. We suggest the afternoon of Friday, February 6 for such a meeting.
One of the things to begin thinking about is possible dates for the next social forum. The original thinking was June 2010. To that end we still have the Downtown Marriott and Cobo Center holding June 8-14 for us. We can explore what other options there are for 2010 but the biggest venues are booked very far in advance, so time is of the essence if we want to hold the next forum in 2010. This is one the discussions we need to start right away.
Thank you so much for your interest, dedication and work. We are on the road to the next US Social Forum!
